DIRECTV ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
The Three most common DirecTV issues are No Image, Non Responsive Receivers or No Channel ID Feedback. Channel Feedback is the ability to pull the channel call signs, like ESPN, off of the DIRECTV (DTV) boxes and display them on your touchscreen so you know what channels the TVs are tuned to.
A) NO IMAGE or Bouncing DTV logo on screen
This commonly happens if a game ends on a temporary channel used just for that broadcast. When the game is over the channel is blacked out. We get this call a lot in the morning the day after a big game was on, then next morning the channel is dark and people think the receiver is bad.
- Verify the DTV receiver is on, sometimes it's hard to tell because the power indicator light is very dim (on purpose). Use a DTV remote or press the power button on the receiver.
- Verify the receiver is tuned to an active station. Sometimes there is nothing on the channel the receiver is tuned to so the screen will be black or have a DTV logo moving around on the screen.
- Tune the receiver to a known working channel. Try 2, 4, CNN, etc, that you know has active programming.
B) RESET THE RECEIVER
Most DirecTV issues can be resolved by resetting the DTV receiver (just like your phone or computer). If you are only having an issue with one or two receivers not displaying channel IDs or the receiver is frozen and unresponsive, No Image, etc, a reset should resolve the issue.
NOTE - It can take between 3 and 5 minutes to reboot your receiver, after it reboots it will need time to download the channel guide. this can take up to 30 mins before the receiver is working 100%, give it some time
There are several ways to reset a DTV receiver depending on the model you have. H24 receivers will have the reset button behind the access card cover on the right front side. Push the door to open it, then press the red reset button next to the access card slot to reset the receiver. On H25 receivers the reset button is on the right side panel of the case. If your AV rack has side panels they can be removed by sliding them up using the handles, the reset buttons are on the right side lower rack.
H24 RECEIVER - RESET BUTTON BEHIND ACCESS CARD COVER
H25 RECEIVER - RESET BUTTON ON RIGHT SIDE NEXT TO CARD
If you can't get to the reset button or find it: Unplug the receiver behind the AV Rack to cut power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. The receiver will take 3 to 5 minutes to power up after a reset. Unplug the power input behind the receiver to make sure it's the right one.
If resetting the receivers doesn't help or you have more than one or two receivers not responding you will need to reset the DTV SWiM and Cinema Kit. This is the device that connects your DirecTV receiver to the AV network so they can be controlled by the touch screen.
C) RESET THE CINEMA KIT
There are a few styles of Cinema Kits that have been installed over the years. If you have a Touchscreen, one of these units is attached inside the back of the AV rack near the DTV receivers.
- Older Cinema kits have 3 cables, a Cat5 cable, Antenna Coax and a Power Connector. For these just unplug the power connector, you WILL NOT lose your video feed when you unplug it. Wait 15 Secondcs and plug it back in, then text your channel recall.
Note: You WILL NOT LOSE ALL DTV signal while power cycling the Cinema Kit.
To power cycle the device just pull the small power plug out of the device (circled in the photo) wait 5 seconds and plug it back in (these is no chance of getting shocked, it's low voltage like a phone charger).
It will take a couple minutes for everything to sync back up. Once everything is back online you should regain control and or Channel ID Feedback.
D) DTV RECEIVER NETWORK SETTINGS
In addition to having a functioning Cinema Kit, there are also a few settings that need to be checked on the receivers using the DirecTV remote control. Before using the DTV remote make sure it has fresh batteries in it.
If you get a replacement DTV box, or if your existing DTV box loses its settings (this happens on occasion), you will need to enter these settings manually. Using the remote navigate to Help => Settings => Internet Setup =>Advanced Setup => Advance IP Config
Then check the static IP address of the receiver that isn't working, if it's different than what's in this list please enter the correct IP address from this list.
